Interview with Nicholas Holland of Side Hobby

26 10 2009

I wrote a brief article not too long ago about a recent iPhone obsession of mine called gpsAssassins; if you haven’t checked it out please do so. Due to that obsession and my obvious persistent nature I recently had the opportunity to ask Nicholas Holland CEO of Side Hobby, who developed gpsAssassins, a few questions about their game along with the overall challenges that arise when developing for the iPhone. Check out the full written exchange below. Enjoy!

With the possession of the iPhone comes the opportunity to play thousands of games. While personally my thoughts of the iPhone as a gaming platform are still undecided I can not deny that many of the games are excellent for those small doses of time that you need to fill.

A perfect example of that is the recently released text based role playing game called “gpsAssassins: Kill your Neighbor” where the basis is kill or be killed.

Factoring Price In Review Scores

23 10 2009

Opinion

I have been bothered by a habit in the gaming enthusiast press which recently has gotten severe enough for me to write this article. What habit might that be, well many issues need to be revamped but as I divulge deeper into this culture I find issues that to me make no sense.

For instance, why are price points not factored into review scores?

This issue first came apparent to me when I wrote an article about retail price point and how I think the current price structure is flawed. Anyways when I read reviews I rarely if ever see these reviews even discuss price besides the infrequent blurbs simply stating the manufactures suggested retail price (MSRP). Why is this? From what I can tell one of the deciding factors in a purchasing decision is the price point, especially in this economic climate. Is it because most of the major blogs receive free copies for review? Personally, Yes, I think this has something to do with it along with how disconnected most reviewers are from their audience. Most gamers can’t or don’t play every game or play through a game and then immediately jump to the next title like many in the enthusiast press are forced to do. Instead they pick up a game they hope to enjoy and play that over and over until the next purchase which can be months away. Therefore the value of that purchase is a great deal more important to them versus the reviewer who rarely plays a game again.

So why isn’t price point included in review scores if we know that is a factor? Well some may say that price doesn’t affect the quality of games.

So let’s address that, are certain games better or worse because of their price? I don’t think price changes a game, but do believe it changes the experience. So as a reviewer you are critiquing that game from your experience so why shouldn’t price be included? Let me attempt to be more clear, let’s say I bought both Call of Duty 4 and Terminator Salvation for $60. One of those games I have gotten a tremendous amount of play time out of while the other I had trouble even finishing to write a review. Therefore inherently I felt I received a better value with one over the other which also affected my overall experience with those titles. Obviously that should be reflected in my review. Would that experience and feeling of value change if let’s say I got Terminator Salvation for $30 instead of $60? Of Course! The game didn’t change at all but my experience did so I believe that should be reflected in people’s review of that product. The same could hold true for a good game, if I feel positive towards a purchase because I got a good deal no matter the price then that would favorably show up in the review.

Look, I understand reviews are subjective and only one person’s opinion and that different people have different likes and dislikes. But I believe the reader should be given all the necessary information in order to make a purchasing decision. Then it is up to the reader to make an informed decision on the information they have gathered regardless if they agree or disagree with the reviewers value judgment or even their review at all. Gamers depend on reviews to help guide their purchases, so why shouldn’t this information be included?

Ultimately reviews are for us, gamers, and its obvious price point is a major factor in a consumers buying decision. Discretionary income is decreasing and consumers want to find the most bang for their buck. It is of my belief that gamers are willing to tolerate flaws and length of a game for a cheaper price. Ultimately the decision by the consumer to open their wallet and purchase a game is the only review that matters.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Review

23 09 2009

Batman Boxart

Intro

RockSteady’s newest game is a third person action adventure game with a creative mixture of stealth elements based off the famous DC comic book superhero Batman titled Batman: Arkham Asylum. This game was recently released on August 25th 2009 for multiple platforms including the PlayStation 3.

In Arkham Asylum you play as Batman who has just easily captured the Joker which leaves The Dark Knight very wary. Upon returning him to Arkham Asylum Batman’s instincts are proven right when apparently the Joker deliberately allowed himself to be captured and with the help of Harley Quinn escapes the watchful eye of Batman. The Joker soon takes control of the island and reveals his grand scheme. So with only radio help from the oracle and armed with his full arsenal of gadgets Batman must investigate and stop the Joker. Of course the Joker has other plans and leads Batman through an elaborate journey of Arkham Asylum where coincidentally many of Batman’s other villains are being held.

The one true question is whether this specific title can cleanse itself of the problems that have riddled the previous Batman titles and other comic book based video games or break the mold and truly be unique? Continue reading to hear my take.

Dates Announced for Fallout 3 PS3 DLC & More

17 09 2009

FO3 PS3 GOTY Art

One of my favorite games of lat year was Fallout 3 — the story was immersing and the world was expansive with plenty of room to explore. I enjoyed it so much that it was the first runner up in last years Game of The Year list.

However because I played the PlayStation 3 version I was unable to play any of the DLC, which was “exclusive” at that time to the Xbox 360, much to my disappointment. So when Bethesda announced a few months ago that the DLC would be coming to the PlayStation 3 I was ecstatic.

However the initial date has long came and passed but good news was announced today by Bethesda that the PlayStation 3 DLC is just around the corner. How close you ask?

Well the first piece of DLC, “Broken Steel”, will be available next Thursday September 24th. The following will be released weekly starting with “Operation: Anchorage” and “The Pitt” and lastly “Point Lookout” and “Mothership Zeta”.

Also if you haven’t yet picked up Fallout 3, and why not?, then the following week October 13th the Game of The Year edition which includes all five of the DLC packs will be released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for $59.99. Before you ask, Yes all of your old save files will work with the game of the year edition so there is no excuse not to play.

I hope to see you out in the Wastelands…

4 08 2009

Despite July being a slow month for the site and gaming news in general I felt it still needed a wrap up post. The month was busy for me personally and with the busy fall just around the corner the small break was a welcomed change. Demo Impressions: Fight Night Round 4 & Ghostbusters

24 07 2009

Despite my busy schedule and complete infatuation with inFAMOUS I found the time to try out some overdue demos, below are my quick thoughts and impressions as I played through them.

Fight Night Round 4

I am understandably late to the party on trying out this title but admittedly I was not overly hyped to play it. While I do enjoy your typical boxing match I am not a fanatic fan that follows the sport and have never even played a traditional boxing game. However I was eager to try out Fight Night Round 4 due to the praise and positive reviews it has received.

FightNightRd4

Upon loading the demo I was taken to the tutorial mode where a trainer teaches you the different types of punches using the right thumb stick and the occasional trigger buttons. Most of the criticism I heard was because of the controls and while I acknowledge they were difficult at first I was able to adapt. After successful completion of the tutorial you are given the option to set foot in the ring and control either Ricky Hatton or Manny Pacquiao. The fight appeared very technical and fast paced which is when my problems with the controls surfaced. When trying to land certain combos or punches I would often throw the wrong punch during the frantic nature of the fight even though I was sure I inputted the correct sequence. I blame this more on my inexperience with the controls and the boxing genre than the accuracy of the controls. So instead I resorted to just jabbing my way to a full 3 round victory by way of decision. Technically speaking the game appeared flawless, the graphics were superb and the audio was spot on not to mention the detailed physics each boxer showed throughout each match.

If the demo is any indication of the final product then I would suspect Fight Night Round 4 will be an exceptional title for the serious fans and casual fans alike.

Ghostbusters

Like most others that grew up watching Ghostbusters I am a fan of the movies so naturally I was eager to play the video game version which by all accounts is complete fan service. The game has most of the original actors’ doing voice work and the script was actually written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

Ghostbusters

The demo starts like a movie which was a nice touch but lost its luster after the 5th or 6th logo that popped up setting the tone for the rest of the game. During the entire time I felt disconnected with the game, the voice acting was off, the visuals while not as bad as I feared were average and the environments were fairly bland. I even had trouble navigating through the game which finally was accomplished by trial and error. Don’t get me wrong I don’t mean to completely trash this game there were some refreshing and fun parts. For instance at times I actually felt like part of the Ghostbusters gang complete with Proton Pack. Plus the whole experience of blasting and trapping the ghost was satisfying due to the controls being intuitive and easy. However overall the game is very linear which by itself isn’t bad but I felt the game play was also hurried along. On top of that the story felt forced and was repetitive after awhile. Despite the negatives there are some portions of the game that seem to have potential and in the demo were fun.

Truth is I really wanted to enjoy this game but for some reason I wasn’t able to. Judging from my time with the game I would personally wait to purchase this game even as a fan.

InFamous Review

Infamous Box Art

InFAMOUS is a sandbox-style third person action adventure game that is exclusive to the Playstation 3 and developed by Sucker Punch Productions who were previously behind the Sly Cooper series. In this game you take control of Cole MacGrath a bike messenger who survives a massive explosion that disables Empire City, a fictional world where the game takes place. This explosion caused a plague to develop thus forcing the military to quarantine the entire city. The blast subsequently granted Cole electrical based powers allowing him to traverse the city to reveal the conspiracy behind the blast and the origins of his powers while fighting off the resistance of various gangs and factions that are attempting to take over the city.

Can inFAMOUS successfully blend these aspects into an electrifying game, or will it simply be uninspiring? Continue reading to find out.
